Focus of Story: Furloughs & Budget Cuts
The story would focus on how businesses hold up with less workers and how the workers get affected with the pay. Also focus on how it affects people who lost their jobs and their families.
The possibility for going deep could be how people who have taken budget cuts manage and how their lives had to change. It could also be on how budget cuts benefited the company/business.
1. The focus of the story is Teen Pregnancy
2. The human face of the story is Natalie and Micah didn't know the last name
3. She had a baby when she was 16 then had another one at the age of 21. The father of the kids left her with the 2 kids and she is a student in college and lives with her parents. She also grew up without a father but she doesnt want her kids to grow up the same way.
4. What the struggle is no having a father there, Her different lifestyle (drugs and bad stuff)

My story i got from Brittany for the topic "I have an issue that I would like to investigate for "Now loading" ' is about the school dress code.
THe Focus: the school dress code and the different perspectives of it
The "human face": the male perspective on the female inappropriate dress code
The Wider context: the reputation it gives to our school and the people in it
Possibility to go deep: what would benefit from the enforced dress code and future effects for the school and the students..controversy is our reputation and how student and parents would feel about it

(Amber's Story)
1. Group of people who "pimp their bikes" and ride from Kalihi through Waikiki.
2. A guy who used to ride in the group. His name is Ryan.
3. The group rides on the road so bicycle safety is an issue.
4. We can go deep into the story because of the bike safety thing. Moanalua grad, Zach Manago, passed away because biking on the road. This connects the story to MoHS.

1. Focus of the story: Recycling and going green.
2. The "human face" of the story: The manager and owner of the store "Super Citizen".
3. The wider context: Recycling is a big issue in our world today. This store not only tries to be green but they persuade others to go green since recycling helps us all in the long run.
4. Going deep: Majority of the products in Super Citizen are recyclable and eco-friendly. Their goal is to be able to provide products that match the eco-conscious consumer.

(Austin's Story: Baseball college scout)
Focus of Story:
This professional baseball scout from the Colorado Rockies helps kids from Hawaii to get noticed and observed by mainland colleges.
"Human Face" : Bruce Sugeawa
Wider Context: Mainland colleges don't notice high schoolers that play in Hawaii because we are so far away. Because children from Hawaii don't get noticed as much for scholarships and stuff, this scout goes to find players and help them get a chance for mainland college. He is there to help them out & show the mainland what these kids can do, and make the mainland colleges want these baseball players.
"Going Deep" : Why he decides to help these kids out and the tough parts of this job and how he copes with it. How hard he tries to get these baseball players to a good mainland college.

Focus: Life Stories
Human Face: Destrie's spiritual mom who had a hard life growing up
Wider Context: She was already born hated by her family. She was then sexually, verbally, and physically abused.
Going Deep: She was saved at 16 by going to church. She then achieved a passion to spread the word for hope and the future. Her past helps her help people today.
1. The focus is Non Discrimination
2. Mark Bautista
3. He was a male that ran for Homecoming Queen and won even though he was a boy. His class still voted for him to be Queen along with his friend as the king.
4. If there was any problems with him trying to run with admin because he was a boy. What made him decide to run for this position.

Focus of Story: 60+ year old seniors taking gymnastic classes.
Human Face: Any of the senior gymnasts.
Wider Context: Compare these people to normal, un-athletic seniors.
Possibilities for going deep: Gymnastic classes could help seniors stay sharp and "make them feel young again."

Focus of Story: Recycling
Human Face: Hi 5¢ workers and the people who go to recycle.
The Wider Context: The story would focus on how people nowadays don't know how to recycle and it's starting to turn into a global problem. However, people locally can recycle their cans and bottles through a HI 5¢ center.
Possibilities for "going deep" : People can help to recycle as many beverage containers as possible to prevent these containers from ending up in the waste stream or as litter in the community.

2. The human face of this story is the Kumu Ramon Acoba
3. Ramon is a famous Hula dancer who preforms regularly in Waikiki and teaches Hula. He is so passionate about Hula that he teaches everyone for free at their own homes.
4. I think it could go deeper by finding why he does what he does, how he got started in it, and why he really does it for free

Human Face: Drummond Family
Wider Context: Keegan's parents spent two years through the adoption process. They travelled to the Philippines in December of 2010 to take home their daughter, Gracie.
Going Deep: We could find why Keegan's parents wanted to adopt their daughter and understand what they had to go through to do so.

1. The focus of the story: Animal Cruelty
2. The "human face" of the story: Mrs. Lynell (Director of ASPCA)
3. The wider context: Over 65 billion animals are abused every year, however, only 1,500 of them are rescued. Finding out how many active organizations/workers we have in Hawaii.
4. Going deep: Why do people choose to save animals? Mrs. Lynell's past experience with saving animals. When did she begin to want to take action against animal cruelty?

Most of you got 5/5 points. The ones who didn't lost points because their stories weren't really "new" or they didn't have a distinct "human face." Those are the two major elements that determine whether a story is "newsworthy" or not..

3.The wider context: Illegal animals being found can put harm on any other animals or people and they coulod lead to serious problems such as a disease or damage of property.

Human Face: Kimberly Pine(Representative) or Willie Espero(Senator)
Wider Context: Many veterans today were 'tricked' into thinking that the government would provide them food and shelter when they retire, but they got none of that. Now, they struggle to fight for things to live.
Possibilities for “Going Deep”: Find out why are they homeless and whether the government is trying to give them benefits, since they’re retired and they've sacrificed themselves to serve our country. Also, we could look for organizations that help the veterans, or ways that the community could help them.

Focus of Story: Football coach with a birth defect
Human Face: Coach C.T.
Wider Context: He coaches football like any other coach. Teaching the plays and telling them what to do/what not to do.
Going Deep: Even though he has a birth defect he still do things what other people can do. It doesn't keep him from being like any other person in the world.

1.Focus of the story: Cyber bullying.
2."Human face" of the story: Jerica Daligdig and Kevin Caguillo
3. Wider context: Cyber bullying has become a big issue we hear about it more often in the media. People hurting themselves over hurtful words shared over the internet. Jerica and Kevin both experienced this type of bullying being teased and put down for who they are.
4.Going deep: A story like this a lot of teens can relate to, Jerica and Kevin being examples. With facebook being so popular and other social networks teens are putting themselves out there and consequence of that a lot of the time result to being cyber bullied and really emotionally and mentally hurt.

Wider Context: He recycles to promote a better world with less polution.
Going Deep: The way he promotes less polution is by donating shoes to create playground floors
1. Focus of the story: Local athlete goes to worlds
2. " Human Face " : Nani Vercruyssen
3. Wider context: Not many local athletes have gone and she is one of the few teens that have gotten to go. She has gotten a couple of chances to go and might get another this year. Being in Hawaii, we don't get the best because we're so far away from the rest of the country and getting the opportunity to go is a big deal.
4. Possibilites for " going deep " : Find out how long she's been going to gymnastics. How it has affected her life. What was her true motivation when doing gymnastics. Has she had any major injuries or possible scares that could have affected her gymnastics or her life in a big way.
