Oh yeah

well, we just got back home, finally got to get some rest, im not really sure if anyone is still looking at this or what. But i just wanted to say some formal thank yous to everyone that helped to make the 2009 STN trip possible.

First of all representative Wakai, thank you for getting us the SNLB job to help us fundraise, and thank you for coming to help us step up our game and critique our packages and all that. We really felt like a team while participating in the sweet 16 while we wore the shirts you got us, and we enjoyed the dinner you treated us. =]

It was last minute, but thanks to Mr. Meyer for stepping up to the plate and coming to chaperone us. Your authority was slightly scary at times, but then again it was greatly appreciated. We all ended up bonding with you..."uncle ben" haha. Wait doesnt uncle ben make like seasoned rice or something?

Well, you had all the ideas and everything it was good to run things past you and hear your opinion about it. Thanks for all the stupid laughs and jokes. I look forward to shooting that film for STN next year. Well over this short but long trip you have earned many different names such as Daddy-O, Uncle Moke, and Octodad. But anyways it was really fun.

And lastly thank you mrs. sueoka for everything you did to prepare us for this trip. We really missed you on the trip and we wished you couldve came with us. We tried our best to get some awards to bring back, but our best wasnt good enough =[. Thanks for all the support, during and before the trip. All the times you stayed late, all the board meeting tapings and everything. THANK YOU!

Well thats the major people i have to thank for making the trip possible. I know speak on behalf of the whole broadcast journalism class and would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all of those who have helped.

Well, im off to go eat some long awaited rice....im coming rice! i missed you so much! Oh! and fruit punch! Yaaay! Well im out...Peace. "Stay classy" or whatever that little kid said. (inside joke)

Hope you all were able to finally get on the trolley and get to Justine's well-researched shopping mall :)

And, I know you're a bit disappointed at not getting any awards...but be assured that, in my mind...and heart...you are all winners! I am so very proud of you guys
...your stepping up to the plate to fulfill your commitments
...like our Kina'ole show and all your many exams that you had to pre-take before going on the trip...Meghan and Tyler to name a couple of delegates that I know had a rough pre-trip schedule
...and all your careful planning to get the equipment ready and packed for the big trip (and Ben's included in that effort, and then some!)...

I was so excited to hear each update on your Sweet 16 production...and to be included in your wonderful victory walk to deposit your tape!

Remember that feeling of accomplishment...and the feeling of accomplishment that each of you felt upon completing your onsite competitions...*that* is truly the victory you take with you. Trophies and placques are nice...but they are physical things...it is the intangible, the feeling of confidence and satisfaction that each one of you *owned* at this convention...that is the true prize...

So...to all my STN delegates...bravo!!!

Anyway! Liz and Ashley here :) 

So, today was a really relaxing day (minus those who had their competitions: Keith, who did the live report, Ariel and Brian, who did spot feature, the finishing up of PSAs by Katreina, Chanelle, and Andrew, and Tyler and Ren for show-opening for final edit.)  We felt bad for those who had to wake up extra early, some of the wakeup calls were 6am! Crazy.  Anyway, for the remainder of us, we had breakout sessions to go to. The two that we attended today were excellent, we attended one about storyboarding and the fundamentals of directing.  All of us seemed to enjoy and take a lot out of these sessions and it's prettttyyy awesome that we got this opportunity to hear from all these people already working in these industries.  

(By the way, oranges and bananas from the hotel grocery store are 85 cents each! WHAT A RIP OFF! But, we have to admit, these oranges were pretty much the best oranges we've ever had in our entire lives.  So I suppose it's worth it...)

Aside from that, a lot of us took naps today, sneaking in a couple hours between sessions here and there.  As a result of that, we all look a little prettier than we did yesterday :D Let's hope that for the rest of our trip, our sleeping habits will improve so that when we return to Hawaii, we will be the happy little perfect children that you remember us leaving as... right? (; 

Tonight was also really exciting because it was the film festival, where the top ten music videos were being presented, along with awards for different short kids submitted from different schools.  To our surprise, our video (Liz, Ashley, Justine and Lawrence's) was the first to be shown! WE MADE TOP TEN! We're really really happy because we did work really hard on our video and top 10 out of about 75 is not bad.. Let's just hope we place top 3 tomorrow when the winners get announced.  Of course our entire MoHS team worked very hard and diligently on all our competitions-- we hope we make you proud! We understand that winning is not the most important thing, rather, what we've gained from this experience. I think it's safe to say that we've all gained something from this trip.

We were really impressed by a lot of other school's submissions, music videos, and short films.  There was actually a lot of AMAZING short films submitted from school from all across the country.  It was actually really inspiring.

Tomorrow, we're rising up bright and early for closing ceremonies! We are all very excited.  We miss you all and we'll be back before you know it! (We know that this excites you greatly... ^_^ )

ALOOOOHHHHAAA! So last night we all went to bed super late and was super tired this morning. We failed to wake up for the EARLY breakout sessions. But Mr. Meyers and Mr. Ikenaga(Daddy-O) were nice enough to let us sleep in. My room ended up waking up at 9:45AM rushing down to the ballroom for the opening ceremonies.
It was pretty intense. All the different people, from all the different schools, from all the different states. Nice to meet new people. Then the doors open, the first thing you notice are the two big screens in the front. Rows of chairs, being quickly filled by other students. It was super crazy, but we were all too tired to fully feel it. First we watched a music video produced by some high school. It was pretty cool. Then the student of the year came up and spoke. Pretty inspiring words. The president of STN spoke, and then John Roberts from CNN came up to talk. Awesome huh? I gotta be honest, we were too tired to fully listen. He was funny, cool, and very passionate.
After the ceremonies, we left to go eat lunch buffet as a group. We met a guy originally from Hawaii and he was cool. I had PSA today, so Chanelle, Katreina and I had to go to our briefing. Our topic is flu vaccine. We filmed and got lots of good stuff. Then we went back, and played the Wii with Mr. Meyer. He beat me! But I let him win (; hahaha.
Then comes the dance. It was pretty lame. They played old songs. Most of the Hawaii people were on the side. But we still had fun.
So I have PSA editing tomorrow at 6 AM!
Thats super EARLY. So im gonna go sleep. niiiight. ill post pictures tomorrow night..

When Darkness Turns to Light

Hello everyone! This is Lawrence.

Today was an incredibly stressful yet awesome day. The last two days (arrival and Sweet 16 competition) were very difficult because of the lack of sleep and the stress.

Today, I had to do the music video competition, and boy was I worried. We were delayed about 30 minutes. The instructions were stupid and there were some deaf people in the back who kept asking questions that were already answered. When we finally left the place and went back up to our rooms to listen to music, we were listening to the wrong song. The disc said to use "Track 12" when we were actually supposed to use "Track 1". We had the lyrics and I said "Why did we get lyrics to a song with no lyrics?" Anyway, we finally asked and the officials told us to use "Track 1". Anyway, we got this song that was like one of those 80's rap, something that Mr. Meyers would enjoy so much. It had so much cheesy tunes and the words were kind of weird. But somehow, we managed to pull it off and make a really nice music video, and after we find out if we win (or not, but hopefully we will!), I will try to put it up on youtube or something so people can hear how lame the song was and how we did it. It was hard, but my group members Ashley, Justine, and Liz were very creative and they thought of most of it and I was able to shoot it for them. They changed my mind that the project was stupid, and I enjoy (our video) now. But I still dislike the song. 

Also, although the contest was delayed 30 minutes and had misunderstandings, they extended the filming and editing time by one hour. With that, we finished about an hour ahead of schedule (aside from some printing to tape issues that I don't count against our clock) and I think this is one of those times where darkness turned to light.

Anyway, I think I've written too much. Maybe the last entries done today would be waay down on this page. Anyway, I guess that's the most important thing today for me and... uh... Bye!

wahoo!! day 3 complete!

ok so....

today is now thursday! and its now 11:48 that im starting to blog. (at night)

so far we got through the first day of individual competitions... i had the anchoring one, and boy it was nerve racking!!! it was just a day filled with mixed emotions! LITERALLY!!! (and im using it right.... inside joke) ok, so like i had to wake up at 7:30 for a session about anchoring, and i was so not up for it! after sweet 16 i got pretty much drained, but hey, it was a session worth going since i got really great tips on anchoring. then i was basically free till a totally off schedule conference that freaked me out completely! i mean i thought that i was going to be late for my OWN competition and then fail it.... it stressed me out so bad that i was a pissy pants.... even Mr. Myers was shocked to see me totally freaked out like i was. but i calmed down. i had the butterflies in my tummy like how i did during the pageant, so im sure that was a good thing. and when it came down to my competition i was on it... well i thought i was. i was almost late TWICE!!!! i made it there like on the dot! ok, well anyways my competition i had to rewrite a wre script in broadcast form then read live to tape in 45 mins. with ONLY one try. and i was scared beyond belief. i wanted to cry when my taping was done, i messed up a bunch load of times and i think i even talked to fast... im so worried on how i did i cant really focus... but now that i think of it, in a way my dad would say "always think positive, never negative" so thats just what im going to do! im surely confident on how i did and i did it to have fun, and i did.... and maybe comeback with an award, and possibly beat Waianae High School to show my brother (he goes there) that we DO got what it takes. im pretty darn sure i did a good job! oh yeah! and today we had the dance... and it gets hot on the dance floor with all of the kids. and its fun to see how others dance.. just to sum it all up i love this convention! i think its a great opportunity to really get the skills needed to be a GREAT broadcaster or photographer.

i would say more, but DADDY-O here is teasing me about writing my whole life story.. theres just sooooooo much to write because it just never stops!

Kick off to STN Convention!

Today was the first day of the convention for STN and we had a long day. 

It was the first day of our individual competitions and we also had breakouts where professionals were giving teachings to the students here.

For me I had no competition and went to a few break outs and at the end of the day we had the STN Dance Party. It was another long day, but we managed to get through it. 

I miss you parents&brother&rusty!

Well I've been taking a load of pictures and tomorrow will be another long day since I have my Live Reporting Competition to go into!

Ahhh but wait at the start of the day we had the Opening Ceremony to the convention and one thing the speaker said that really got to me was that 2 years ago the convention had at least 500 people who attended, this year there were over 1,000 people in that grand ballroom! crazy! but anyways besides that I myself had to endure the day by myself while most of my class had to go to their competitions.

Well we got days left here in Florida and I miss Hawaii, ALOHA!

Sweet 16

sorry we couldnt post this up last night, had some technical difficulties.

SECOND DAY, SWEET SIXTEEN :)

HELLOOO EVERYONE :)

well, let's see, it was a pretty busy, but successful day :) it all started off with all different alarms and wake up calls going off in our room around 545AM. It was more of a funny experience than a challenging one. We rushed out of our rooms and headed downstairs to the ballroom to receive our paper with the 16 word choices to choice from for SWEET SIXTEEN :) after all the negotiating, we all agreed and narrowed it down to the word "ABSORB" - we broke into  our teams and each found a "story." it all started and everyone was off filming. it was pretty intimidating to be running around finding people to interview with hundreds of other kids trying to do the same thing. my team, Tyler, Me (meghan), and Robynn went to the mall across the street and waited for the stores to open until we found a subject... our way of ABSORB was how people are so ABSORBED into their jobs.. we found our subject at a ice cream factory, a austria couple owned it, and moved here to orlando just to open it up and give opportunities to their kids... its cool how everyone has a unique story :)

well, we went back to the editing area and everyone was at a good start... and fast forward... we all finished... running to the box to turn in our tape about one hour before deadline felt amazing :) we proudly waited for the other hawaii schools to finish and cheered them on as they turned it in :)

now, we're getting ready to sleep :)

HOLA EVERYONE!

good after non to some and good night to others! wow, today was a good experience since it was MY first sweet 16 competition. Everyone got up pretty easily yet tired. I was nervous not knowing to expect from myself and my team, Andrew and Keith. We were surprised to actually have a good story for our package. The word we chose as a team of broadcast was 'ABSORB'. As for my team and I we chose to do a package on 'ROOKIES' and what they want to gain from this convention and what influenced them to come. As a rookie myself, it was amazing how schools get along so easily. Everyone seemed like a big family in the ballroom. We weren't stressed out as much as we thought. Our time management skills were pretty good. We were the first team to finish our package so we decided to go get some good 'VIENNESE ICE CREAM' also known as GALLATO, with tyler(: it was funn. It took me a while to eat my ice cream but eventually I got full and andrew trannny ate my left overs. While we were eating, tyler filmed extra b-roll for his group package.

I'm proud of our school in getting the tape in on time. Everyone pumped after they had an hour of break to shower and rest, feeling fresh and clean. Overall we finished successfully with no stress, but with confidence. MAAAAAN, we just all can't wait for tomorrow and see what's goood. Goodnight everyone(:

Anyways, today was a really hectic day. We woke up super early this morning and I guess I was still getting use to the time changes so I couldn't sleep much last night and that totally affected my day. I guess I was just super tired today. The competition was interesting though. We voted ABSORB as our topic because when we looked it up it seemed to have the biggest variety of definitions and angles. After our pitches we were sent off to do our stories. My group did the affects of media influencing people's style choice and how we ABSORB the media. That was our original angle, but during our interviews the story sort of molded into something else. We instead angled it to show how sometimes media affects us but after so long we develop our own styles. We had a lot of conflicts in our groups, or at least my group. It consisted of differences of opinions and working habbits, but in the end the package was completed, and we're still all friends. People make mistakes sometimes, we're bound to disagree or even fight but as long as in the end you remember that you were all friends in the beginning we can get over it. And our show was completed, 4 stories, and 2 PSA's all put together in our show and submitted about an hour before they even called time. And I'm so proud of everyone! We're all extremely tired and its been a long day but we're all excited about tomorrow and our separate competitions.

Hi Mrs. S and Benny,

Well first off I would like to say that I miss you guys!!  

Today, well after around 5, was hectic, crazy, tiring, long, and mostly rewarding.  Waking up at 6:00 am was the start of our day.  We went the briefing EARLY with much time to spare, yes, can you believe it.  The list of 16 words included: ginormous, joy, energy, plethora, fun, ubiquity, and more.  Finally, after much arguing, we ended up choosing the word absorb and came up with many different ideas.   Ooh and I figured out (with the help of Mr. Ikenage), nevermind Mr. Ikenage figured out how to log and capture our host without recording it first then logging.  We were able to log and capture as we filmed the host.  This made things soooo much easier and saved a lot of time.  Another thing, the bunker was crazy wired with cables for power, and i ended up tripping and breaking my slipper!  Actually, I probably tripped like 10 times today!   I guess I never learned to watch where I'm walking. :(

So finally after, let's say, 15 hours we finished our sweet 16 and turned in the tape with big smiles on our faces.  The stress, and tripping, I can say, was all worth it.  We did our best and all for you two ahhh I hope we come back with something for you guys.  :)

And props to you guys for inaugurating the blog in such fine style! It was great fun reading and viewing the glimpses into your first day in Orlando!

And, hey, when you make that victory run, see if someone can capture it on tape! Would be great to use clips of you guys, throughout the convention, in future shows.

Thank you again for the awesome feat of poetic inspiration...I can honestly say that it's a first for me as a teacher, to have my students write me a poem like that :)

As long as I don't drown in my large size Now Loading shirt, I will be wearing it tomorrow in school, to be with you guys, in spirit, as you complete your third Sweet 16!!!!

March SEVENTEEN ^____^

Aloooooha from Orlando :)

So we arrived at the hotel pretty early, that the rooms weren't even ready for us, so to kill time we all went to the mall across from our hotel.  The store was most of favored was Victoria Secrets, well it was more of the girls hahah.  Afterward we went to back to the hotel to clean up a bit then head back out.  Some of us ate at Sizzlers and got a coupon, so we're probably going back to eat breakfast, also because it looked like there was good breakfast.  After having an adventure outside of the hotel we ventured back to the Rosen Plaza and had free time.  We got to meet a couple of people on our floor who are also competing in the STN competition.  One of the coolest thing that happened was when we were in the the elevator, and some other student were in there too and said, hey you guys are from Hawaii right, and we were so amazed that people remember us cheeeee.  So we have an early bedtime tonight, which is at 10:30, because tomorrow we need to get up bright and early, for Sweet Sixteen :D so wish us luck.

MARCH SEVENTEEN

First off...HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!! 

Yay! We finally made it to FLORIDA!  After months of waiting, STN is finally here!  

The first flight we had, from Honolulu to Housten was LOOOOONG!  It felt like forever!

We quickly transfered to a new plane that was on its way to Orlando.  I slept the entire flight.

It was about one hour and forty five minutes.  We caught the shuttle to our hotel, which is reallllyyyy nice!  The shuttle was one of those big air conditioned tour buses.  Mrs. S hooked us up! haha.  When we got settled in our rooms, we went to Pointe Orlando Mall across the street.  We split up.  One group went shopping while the other group went to eat at Johnny Rockets.  I went with Mr. Ikenaga to eat.  Mr. Ikenaga is now known as DADDY-O to the kids in his group.  We even got him a hat with "DADDY-O" on it! We had about an hour and a half to kill after, so we all showered and rested.  We then headed over to Sizzlers to eat, but the group that already ate was full.  We split up once again and went to go shopping while the others ate.  

So far, its been a blast.  Suprisingly I'm not jet-lagged and am adjusting to the time fine.

STN Vblog Day One

STN TRIP: Day 1

After spending hours and hours on the plane, we finally made it to FLORIDA! It took us a little more than seven hours to get to Houston, and another two hours to get to Orlando. I thought our flights went pretty well considering that there were no delays or anything like that. We were stoked to find a lady holding up a sign for us at the airport, and got even more excited after we saw the bus Mrs. Sueoka got us to ride to our hotel. Oh my goodness, we had en entire bus to ourselves! The ride was about 25 minutes to the hotel. The hotel is beautiful, especially the lobby. We had to wait a little while because our room wasn't ready yet, so we walked across the street and did some shopping while the rest ate. When we finally got our room, it didn't take long for kristie, chanelle, trayna, and I to get settled. The rest of the group ate at Sizzlers for dinner, and now we're just at the hotel chillaxing and getting ready for Sweet 16 tomorrow. I'm still jet-lagged from the plane, so that's all for now(:
