Theme Brainstorms 3/29/10

Okay...here are the results of our theme brainstorm today. The staff selected "life" as our next show theme and came up with stories such as "giving life," "no life," "get a life," "lifers," "changing life," "lifestyles," and others.

The other possible themes and their topics are:

LOSS

1. Disabilities- People with loss of certain abilites with their bodies
   
2. Death in a family- A death in a family that truly affected someone's
   life
   
3. losing weight- losing weight and being more healthy
   
4. losing a game- For example, how MOHS lost the final game that could
   have taken them to championship
   
5. losing your faith- losing your faith in yourself, or religion but
   gaining it back again
   
6. losing face- something that embrasing or shameful that had happened to
   you
   
7. homeless- something on the verge of being homeless could tell their story
   
8. loss in their job or in the economy and money
   
9. furlough fridays- how the loss of days of schools impacts a student's
   learning
   
10. upgrading technology- with the loss of old methods of technology,
    people are starting to upgrade there ways of communication.

BJ Critical Thinking #1

Hi guys,

Here are your two blog assignments for today (11/4/09)
Critical thinking skills: analysis, evaluation, and synthesis

1. Think about story subjects (people) and how important they are to your packages. They are the story. So, think critically about how we can improve our ability to spot good subjects and to steer clear of "risky" ones.
   
   • List and describe "red flags" that should warn you that your subject may not be as reliable as you would like.
     
   • List and describe the "checkered flags" that you have found "mother lode" full of "gold coins"
   
   
2. Then, come up with a new "vision statement" for our show. We are seeking to expand the "by teens, for teens" so that it will better encompass the stories we would like to tell.

News Radar #2

Hi again!
Here is the second batch of story ideas from our staffers! It's much richer that the first news radar! Congratulations!
And, since we will be moving into Show #54 very soon, I would suggest checking out the ideas in this and in News Radar #3. As usual, those who submitted the topics above get first priority on their own submissions.

1. Tattoo is the new sense of “style” for teenagers. It means a lot more than just art. It’s a specific kind of art that defines who they are. For a Kealoho Pilares it’s not only his plays that makes him stand out, but also his tattoos. He has multiple tattoos on his body and they all have a meaning. contributed by Ariel
   NOTE: Remember, this will only be significant if he's got something like tatoos covering his entire body or if all of them deal with his grandmother and you'll be able to get that as your focus. Other than that, many teens have significant tatoos. How does this "show me something I can't see"?
   
2. Going on the internet has become a daily addiction for teens. There’s almost one computer in every household. WCC’s Ka Ohana Blog, created by three college students, help us see the good things in life despite these tough economic times. Many blogs are used to express their opinions, write about something, or share information. This blog is created to lighten up people’s day with their latest on sports, music, and entertainment. contributed by Bryan
   NOTE: You're right that there are many blogs out there. You will need to differentiate this blog from the rest. If it's really different from what's out there, this should be a neat story....BUT it need to be obviously and markedly different for you to have a story.
   
3. Watch out it’s Flu Season guys! The new worldwide epidemic of the H1N1 (swine flu) causes more people to be more cautious and protective about their bodies. Now in Oahu there are many places such as Walgreen’s, doctors, and hospitals that give out flu and h1n1 shots. Teenagers should care because there health is at risk as well. Teens don’t really know how serious the flu is. Teens need to know how serious it is especially now that the flu can strike anytime. Teens should know how serious and contagious it could be. contributed by Cynthia & Destrie
   NOTE: This sounds like a good topic becuase, for the first time, young people are in the high risk group. Couple that with the fact that school aged youth are in contact with so many people each day and I think you have the basis for a serious and timely story!
   
4. Back then it was all about wearing brand/expensive things and us teens used to think that buying things from Savers and Ross was gross. Selling things on Myspace is somewhat like an online Savers/Ross. Now a days with the bad economy, a lot of teens like bargains and sales. Selling your old items and things you no longer use is a good way to make money to buy new things. It is a good way to make money, make room in your closet, and keep in fashion. contributed by Daryenne
   NOTE: This might be an interesting topic--a comparison between Savers/Ross and MySpace. You'll need to get footage that will work, though, so check out whether you can tape in Savers/Ross and then that you know how to capture webpages to use in your video (obviously captured outside of school as we can't access MySpace here).
   
5. The teen angle is that Girl Fest is a program to help prevent violence against women and girls through education, and art. Many teens and women are abused and don’t know how to deal with it, or they might just end up in a situation like that. Girl Fest holds a multimedia art festival and conference in November and there is dance, music, art, film, conferences, outreach workshops and lectures on violence. To see what it’s like to be in a program against violence for girls. What programs that are helping women dealing with violence in relationships and to actually see behind the scenes his program. To get stories from some people who have been in violent relationships. contributed by Desha
   NOTE: Okay...if anyone wants to cover this, you'll need to get dates and interview subjects ASAP. If you can do that, it should work nicely.
   
6. Because teens are getting affected by STDs and an insight on teens stories with STDs will help other teens want to protect themselves or not have sex at all. You can show the teen going through their daily routine and them getting their checkup at the hospital. contributed by Ely
   NOTE: Like some of our summer suggested topics, the key to this one is being able to find someone to speak on camera. Your "news radar" mentions doctors and nurses, but the real story is the teens affected by it. If you've got those, you've got a story.
   
7. Since piercing and gauging are popular with teens now, they’d be interested in hearing the opinions of their fellow peers, and those who don’t agree with it. Do teens pierce and gauge their body parts for their own personal interests or because of the pressure to be like “the crowd”? Or is there another reason? Whatever they get out of doing this to their bodies, they must be proud of themselves. contributed by Jonas
   NOTE: We've covered this several times in the past 2 years, so I'd stay away from this topic unless you have a unique angle. The idea of motivation and peer pressure, etc, would not be new.
   
8. This organization accepts young men and women ages 11-24 to come sign-up for their program. We can focus on the teens ability to get through life with an overweight problem. We can walk onto the programs classes and see how that world affects their lives. I can’t take you to see the sweat, tears, and traumas that they are going through. contributed by Kellyann
   NOTE: What is the name of the organization? Be sure to include stuff like this in your news radar. And, as with all of our previous "oranization" stories...find the human angle and you'll find your story.
   
9. My story involves fashion and creativity. It’s clothes that teenage girls could find interesting. A family owned clothing store has been successful through out the years selling their custom shirts. The custom shirts are not your regular average shirts. They are shirts that are custom cut to create a unique design. contributed by Niki
   NOTE: Is this where they make a crew neck tee shirt into something totally different? High school kids do this a lot with their class shirts...that might be an angle as well.
   
10. 808 Twilighters: A group of maybe 4 people were big Fans of the movie and book Twilight and couldn’t get enough of it. So they decided to start with a blog and was surprise to see how many people followed there blog and would write all kinds of comment having conversations about the movie and the love for Twilight. contributed by Raena
    NOTE: If you decide to follow up on this, a critical question will be "what will be your B-roll?" The description of the group and possible package does not seem to highlight a lot of action, more talking.

News Radar #1

Hi everyone!

Here are the suggested stories from staffers. If you are not represented here, send your news radar digital doc to mrs s ASAP! Deadline: This Thursday, 10/8/09!

1. News Radar #1: There are many talented people out there, and Taylor Abordo happens to be one of them. During his freshman year, he auditioned for this group named NLK (No Limit Krew). They auditioned for Hawaii’s Best Dance Crew and got in. They now hold the title of HBDC’s Season 3 winners. submitted by Daryenne
   
2. News Radar #2: Teens enjoy music, and for this band, Kolohe Kai, they sing particularly Hawaiian and reggae songs. This band consists of all high school students, who were recently contestants on brown bags to stardom. submitted by Desha
   
3. News Radar #3: The new furlough schedule that they are trying to get passed for public schools teachers, can not only take affect on the teachers, but it affects the children, and for us teens, it affects are education and possibly our future. submitted by Destrie
   
4. A dance studio teaches kids to dance at the level that professional dancers do. Many of their dancers have been on shows like America’s Best dance crew & So you think you can dance. submitted by Niki
   
5. The teen angle is this family service agency, Parents and Children Working Together, that deals with teens and their family. They have teen programs, family centers, and a care program. Teens come here from help, therapy, or just to be part of a family. NOTE: need "human story" for this one submitted by Kellyann
   
6. There are a lot of teens around the island wearing this brand called ‘Fitted’. Even girls wear this brand. The audience can connect because they probably seen this brand roaming around all over the malls and all around the island & probably wonder why it’s not in multiple stores. It’s because the brand Fitted has its own shop right across from Ala Moana. NOTE: need to distinguish this from a commercial submitted by Micah
   
7. “Adopt a school” is about 6 different high schools with students who speak English as their second language. At this event volunteers will come together with these teenagers to help them with the English language and to make it more comfortable for them. There are probably teens out there who came from a different country and have a hard time speaking English. This package could show these teens that they are not alone. It can also show teens who can speak English that they could be a helping hand to others that cannot speak English. submitted by Cynthia
