SECOND ASSIGNMENT for 2010-2011

Okay, here is assignment #2 for the summer. (everyone is required to do this, BJ I, BJ II, AND leadership)
  • Points: 10
  • Due: Posted as comments on the Now Loading Blog by the start of school, Tuesday, August 3, 2010
  • Directions:
    1. Prove your understanding and mastery of skillful use of language.
    2. Find two (2) articles and play with the language in the headline (see samples below)
    3. Post the original headline and your revision, ALONG WITH THE FIRST PARAGRAPH OF THE ARTICLE, like the samples below.

  • Here's the catch....YOU CANNOT REPEAT ANY EXAMPLES!!! So the early bird gets the credit! Pokey little puppies must read all of the blog comments to be sure yours is a new one. NO CREDIT FOR DUPLICATE EXAMPLES

  • Original Title: “Kauai bottled water company could fold”

    Playing with Words:“County Shuts Tap on Kauai Bottled Water”

    Article: The owner of a bottled water company on Kauai says he could go out of business because of legal action taken by Kauai County.The county claims the company is operating on agricultural land without seeking proper permits and potentially obtaining water from a public resource.

  • Original Title: “Agricultural disaster declared in 4 Hawaii counties”

    Playing with Words: “From Sugar Bowl to Dust Bowl”

    Article: Federal agricultural secretary Thomas Vilsack has designated all four Hawaii counties as agricultural disaster areas because of financial losses from the drought.

  • Original Title: “Nanakuli landfill operator sues city over park plans”

    Playing with Words: “NO PARKING”

    Article: The landowner of property in Nanakuli slated for expansion of the island's only construction and debris landfill is suing the city over the Hannemann administration's plan to use the land for a regional park.

FIRST ASSIGNMENT for 2010-2011

Okay, here is assignment #1 for the summer. (everyone is required to do this, BJ I, BJ II, AND leadership)
  • Points: 10
  • Due: On the Now Loading Blog by the start of the orientation, Saturday, July 10, 2010
  • Directions:
    1. Be alert to catchy, clever use of language all around you
    2. Find 3 excellent examples of plays on words (I have found three samples and have included them below)
    3. Post them on the NowLoading blog, along with where you found them and a short description, like the samples below
