Here are your two blog assignments for today (11/4/09)
Critical thinking skills: analysis, evaluation, and synthesis
- Think about story subjects (people) and how important they are to your packages. They are the story. So, think critically about how we can improve our ability to spot good subjects and to steer clear of "risky" ones.
- List and describe "red flags" that should warn you that your subject may not be as reliable as you would like.
- List and describe the "checkered flags" that you have found "mother lode" full of "gold coins"
- List and describe "red flags" that should warn you that your subject may not be as reliable as you would like.
- Then, come up with a new "vision statement" for our show. We are seeking to expand the "by teens, for teens" so that it will better encompass the stories we would like to tell.
DEADLINE: Thursday 11/5/09
12 comments:
1. We can improve our ability to spot good subjects by conversating with them at first before actually interviewing them. If they are easy to talk to, we will be able to get more information on the story from them.
Red flags:
not easy to talk to
does not talk in complete sentences during the interview
does not know much about the subject
"camera shy"
2. "real stories for real people"
"Red Flags"
-they dont answer your calls
-they dont answer your emails
-not proffesionals

RED FLAGS: When they tell you they CAN make it, but when it comes closer to that day and you call them they don't answer even though you call them a million times.
When they keep on rescheduling the interview/filming dates last minute.
When they sound unsure when asked for an interview appointment
CHECKERED FLAGS: When you're talking story with them on the phone/in person and they're just talking about their life experiences even though it's not the actual interview date.
When you hear stories about them from the source.
When they make an effort to make time in their busy schedule.

Vision Statement: "Reach for the story!"
Justin-
Red flags for a skechty subject would be if the people your trying to contact dont call you back. Or if the subject doesnt seem to have enough content or enough depth to be a good an valuable story.
The vision statement- idk idk idk ,
1. I think the best way to make sure your story is set is by keeping a good line of communication. Phone calls, emails, etc. Whatever you need to do to make sure your subject wont bunk out and leave you hanging.
Red Flags:
Hard to talk to
One word answers, junk answers
Doesnt answer calls
2. "Our vision, your treasures"
1. We can improve our ability to spot good subjects and to steer clear of "risky" ones by finding out previous information about the interview subject. Make sure the person isn't "camera shy" or they are not afraid to be in front of the camera. However, we can use the trick by not telling them there will be a camera, but if we do that, when the day comes they're probably going to freak out and stutter in front of the camera. Before you commit to a story subject, you need to make sure they communicate well. You don't want to be stood up :( that happened to me before :( You should talk to this subject first and see how they talk and act so you can prepare well enough before.
RED FLAGS:
-if they don't respond to emails/calls
-camera shy
-don't communicate well
-doesn't talk very well, doesn't have good responses/answers
-busy schedule
-doesn't really know what they're talking about
